To see the Sidebar, save a file or open a saved file. To open the Sidebar, click in the Activity Bar.

The Sidebar will open to the left of the editor region. The Sidebar's position is fixed, but you can open one for every file in your editor. To learn more about editor regions, take a look at the Visual Studio Code documentation on this feature.
