Answer
When using the Term Browser, you will notice that there are two different view types, standard view and translation view. Each view has its own search type, below you can see a screen-shot of the standard view where you can enter a letter and receive a list of terms that begin with that letter (or "Term was not found" if there is no term to match).
Here you can see a screen-shot of the translation view. In this view, when you enter a single letter into the search box, you receive the option "Show all terms containing "a".
