This is a minor release — we've fixed an issue with connectivity to Acrolinx.
Content Analyzer Couldn’t Connect to Acrolinx
If your organization uses Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) protocol for your proxy settings and a private cloud instance of Acrolinx, you might have found that the Content Analyzer couldn’t connect to Acrolinx. On Microsoft Windows, the Content Analyzer uses the IE connection setting "use automatic configuration script" to try to locate the PAC URL. However, some organizations rely on other modes. We've changed the Content Analyzer to disable auto discovery.
Now, if a valid PAC URL isn’t found, the automatic discovery for PAC is disabled in the Content Analyzer. As a result, you can connect directly to the Internet (without any proxy). And the Content Analyzer should connect successfully to a private cloud instance of Acrolinx.
1.3 Content Analyzer (10 November 2017)
We’re excited to introduce the new 1.3 Content Analyzer with the new Content Analysis dashboard and support for .docx, .docm, and .pptx files. Note that the 1.3 Content Analyzer needs an Acrolinx 5.3 Server and a reporting database. If you don't yet have reporting activated in your license, contact our support team to get a new license at no additional cost.

The Content Analyzer Now Reads Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint Content
You can now use the Content Analyzer to check content from .docx, .docm, and .pptx files. So, there’s no need to batch check .docx files with Acrolinx for Word classic edition anymore.
New Content Analysis Dashboard
Previously, the Content Analyzer generated a report in an Excel file. Now, you get our new Content Analysis dashboard that opens in your browser. In the Content Analysis dashboard, you'll see the overall quality of the content that you've checked. It provides different charts and breakdowns of the statistics to equip you with a powerful analysis tool. Each check that you run gets its unique ID and Content Analysis dashboard URL, so you can easily share the results with your team.
Removed Content Analysis Report
With the introduction of the new Content Analysis dashboard, we've removed all functionality related to the old Excel report. This means that you can no longer aggregate Scorecards that are saved on your computer.
After Cancel Acrolinx Starts Checking from the Beginning
If you canceled a check and then started the check again on the same files, the Content Analyzer continued the previous check instead of starting a new one. Now, Acrolinx starts checking all the files from the beginning.
You might have wondered why the Sign-in button still appeared activated after you'd signed in successfully. We’ve changed that, so that now the button appears grayed out. To sign in again, you can change or reselect the server address.
Improved Connection to Acrolinx with Highly Recursive PAC File
The Content Analyzer previously worked with PAC files with a maximum number of 1000 rules. Sometimes, when connecting to your Acrolinx server via a proxy server the Content Analyzer showed the message "Maximum recursion depth exceeded while parsing PAC file." You might have seen this message if your IT department uses a highly recursive proxy auto-config (PAC) file in your organization's Internet Explorer proxy settings. We’ve increased this limit to 2500 to allow more complex PAC files.
Content Analyzer Won't Start If Acrolinx for Microsoft Word Windows Sidebar Edition Is Running
If your Acrolinx for Word Windows Sidebar edition is running, you can't use the Content Analyzer. We’ve fixed this for Acrolinx for Office 1.2. Update your Word Sidebar edition from Acrolinx for Word version 1.5 to Acrolinx for Office 1.2, and you’ll no longer experience this issue. See details here .
We’ve added support for macOS 10.13 (High Sierra), but dropped official support for Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) and Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). As a reminder, here's the full list of software that you need to use the Content Analyzer:

1.2.1 Content Analyzer (7 September 2017)
This is a minor release — we've fixed some issues with connectivity to the Acrolinx Server.
Sign-In to an Acrolinx Server With an External Base URL Is Now Possible
Previously, the Content Analyzer couldn’t connect to the Acrolinx Server if your Acrolinx administrator set an external base URL in your server configuration. Now, you can still set the ‘externalBaseURL’ property, but it won’t stop the Content Analyzer from connecting to your Acrolinx Server. So, the Content Analyzer uses the server address that you enter in the Preferences and ignores the external base URL when it connects to Acrolinx.
The Content Analyzer Didn't Start or Check When the Acrolinx Server Wasn't Available
If the Acrolinx Server that you connected to became unavailable since the last time you used the Content Analyzer, you couldn’t start the Content Analyzer or run a check. And you wouldn’t be able to open the Preferences to change the Acrolinx Server address. We’ve fixed this so that now, if you can’t reach the Acrolinx Server, Acrolinx asks you to sign in again.
Acrolinx Can Now Connect Through a Proxy That Uses an Automatic Configuration Script
1.2 Content Analyzer (12 May 2017)
This is a major release — we're excited to introduce a new way to sign in to Acrolinx, which is safer and less error-prone. To use all the new features, you need to update to the 5.2 server.
There's a new way you sign in to Acrolinx. You now use Acrolinx sign-in to connect to an Acrolinx Server. This means that you enter your sign-in details in a browser window instead of the Content Analyzer Preferences.
Support for Enterprise Federated Authentication
The Content Analyzer now works with Acrolinx servers enabled with Enterprise Federated Authentication. Acrolinx sign-in will prompt you to enter the relevant credentials if your server administrator has configured your server to use your company's user directory.
Removed Connect Button
The new Content Analyzer only works with servers that support the new Acrolinx sign-in. So, we've removed the Connect button because it's obsolete.
Configure Acrolinx to Recognize Your File Types
Previously, the Content Analyzer only recognized some file types extensions for the supported input types (text, XML, HTML, Markdown, PDF). For example, although Acrolinx reads XML documents, the Content Analyzer wasn’t able to recognize XML files with extensions such as .xliff and .ditamap. Now, the Acrolinx server comes with predefined file type definitions to cover the most common file extensions, including .xliff and .ditamap. What's more your server administrator can also add additional file types in the following file:
If you have super administrator privileges, you can edit the file directly in the dashboard navigate to Maintenance > Configuration Properties .
Content Analyzer Now Uses Proxy Server Settings to Connect to the Acrolinx Server
When connecting to the Acrolinx server, the Content Analyzer now uses proxy server settings from Internet Explorer on Windows and from System settings on Mac. For this, you don't need to do any additional configuration. The Content Analyzer log file will include an entry about which Internet Explorer proxy setting it uses.
Improved Report View
Previously, the Voice Metrics column always appeared in the report. Now, the column only appears if the Scorecard contains results for this checking type.
Content Analyzer Preferences Show Customized Name for Admitted Terms
If your terminologist has configured a custom name for the admitted term type, the preferences windows of the Content Analyzer now displays this custom name. Previously, the Content Analyzer always displayed the default name "admitted terms."
Content Analysis Report Shows Voice Guidance Issues by Characteristic
Previously, the report only showed Voice Metrics. The report now includes more information about the characteristics, for example Clarity and Conversational Tone.
Total Number of Issues Count Now Includes Only Deprecated Terms
Previously, in the Content Analysis report the number of issues count included all term checking type issues. This number was misleading because only the count for deprecated terms influences the Acrolinx score. The total number of issues count now only includes the deprecated terms. Further, we renamed the column Terminology Issues to Deprecated Terms .

Content Analyzer Sometimes Quit Unexpectedly on macOS 10.12 (Sierra)
We've improved the stability of the Content Analyzer so it no longer quits abruptly. Previous versions of the Content Analyzer sometimes quit unexpectedly, most notably after running a check and before you could open the report to review the results.
Content Analyzer Ignores All Files

1.1.1 Content Analyzer (21 March 2017)
This is a minor release but it also includes a few other improvements, bug fixes, and updates.
New Option to Check "Tone of Voice"
We've now added an option for checking "Tone of Voice". The results are displayed in the Content Analysis Report.
Open Web Pages Directly From the Results List
On the results list, you can now click on a URL to open the original web page in a browser either before or after Acrolinx checks your content. This is helpful if you want to verify which pages Acrolinx found before you start the check. That way, you can remove any pages that you don't want to analyze. After Acrolinx analyzes your content, you can check which pages didn't score well and click on the corresponding web page to review it.
The Acrolinx Score Is Now Displayed in Color in the Results
Previously, the color of the Acrolinx Score was black. Now, the text color appears in green, yellow, or red to show the document status. So, you can scan the colors in the list to get a quick overview of an entire project.
We've Changed the Content Analyzer Icon
Previously, the icon for the Content Analyzer was blue-on-white. We've changed it to a green icon so that it's easier to distinguish the Content Analyzer from Acrolinx plug-ins when looking your dock or status bar.
Improved Handling of Files that Acrolinx Fails to Check
In the case that Acrolinx fails to check any files, a red warning icon now appears in the results view. When available you'll see a tooltip with an explanation of why the check failed. Otherwise, we recommend that you check the log files.
We've tidied up the layout and user interface for a better user experience. We've added headers to settings and results to show you where you are on the interface. The file selection field now displays the full path to the content that you selected for checking. We've removed the separate buttons to open and save your settings to simplify the user interface. You can still open and save settings by using the menu items File > Open Settings and File > Save Settings . Also, we renamed the GO button to the more precise LOAD CONTENT .
We've Changed the Label for Checking Content in Headers and Footers
The previous version had a check box labeled Include relevant content . We've changed it to Include Headers and Footers , so that it's now clear what this feature actually does. By default, Acrolinx doesn’t include the content from the headers and footers of your web content.
The Content Analyzer Now Supports Sublanguages
This is only relevant in case your Acrolinx guidance package contains sublanguages such as Swiss German (de-ch) or Simplified Technical English (en-ste). Previously you couldn’t select sublanguages in the settings. We've extended the Content Analyzer so that now you can select sublanguages from the language drop-down.
Turning on Terminology Options Now Selects Term Sets Too
Previously, you had to turn on terminology options, such as deprecated terms and valid terms, and term sets separately. Now, if you turn on deprecated terms, Acrolinx preselects all term sets to save you some clicks. Also, Acrolinx now correctly saves any changes that you make to your settings.
File Names in Scorecard and Analytics Do Now Correspond to the Web Page URLs
If you use the Content Analyzer to analyze your web content, Acrolinx first downloads and saves web pages as cached files. Previously, Acrolinx displayed the names of the cached files in the Scorecard and Dashboard analytics. Now, Acrolinx takes file names from web page URLs so that you can easily identify them in the Scorecard and Dashboard Analytics.
Maximum Link Depth of Zero Didn't Return Any Pages
If you wanted to check just the start page, you would enter a link depth of 0. If you tried this in the previous version, Acrolinx wouldn't find any pages. Now, we've fixed this issue and you should get the pages that you entered as the start address only.
Content Analyzer Won't Start If Acrolinx for Microsoft Word Windows Sidebar Edition Is Running
If your Acrolinx for Word Windows sidebar edition is running, you can't use the Content Analyzer. Close any running instances of Acrolinx for Word, for the Content Analyzer to work. We're working on fixing this conflict in a future release. See details here .
Content Analyzer Quits Unexpectedly on MacOS 10.12 (Sierra)
If you use macOS 10.12 (Sierra) the Content Analyzer may sometimes close unexpectedly. We're working on fixing this issue for a future release. For this reason, we don't officially support macOS 10.12.
We've extended support for Mac OS, we now support version 10.11. As a reminder, here's the full list of software that you need to use the Content Analyzer:

Acrolinx Content Analyzer - Version 1.0 (2 September 2016)
We've got a new product that we'd like to introduce to you; the Acrolinx Content Analyzer.
You can use the Content Analyzer to check local content on your system as well as to check websites. Does this sound familiar? Yes, we thought it was about time that we redesign the Batch Checker.
The Content Analyzer has a great look and feel. And, it's ready to use on both Windows and Mac.
We've designed the Content Analyzer so that it makes the most of the Acrolinx server 5.0 features. See what else is in the 5.0 server in the release notes .

Content Analysis Report in Excel Format
You asked for a report in Excel format and we thought it was a pretty good idea. Now, you get the aggregated report in an .xlsx format so you can play with the results in your tabular editor of choice.

You can check files that are on your computer or web content from websites.
Supported File Formats
The Content Analyzer checks files that are of type TXT, XML, HTML, and PDF*.
*PDF checking requires server version 5.0.
Server-side Extraction Settings for XML Documents
If you're using the Batch Checker and want to switch to the Content Analyzer, then keep in mind that there are some differences when it comes to content extraction. The Batch Checker worked with both client-side and server-side processing for getting Acrolinx to read your text correctly . The Content Analyzer only supports server-side. This means that you now configure your extraction settings (segmentation and filter) using the instructions here . If you'd like help converting your Batch Checker CSDs to use with the Content Analyzer, contact Acrolinx Support. They'll be more than happy to help.
Works Without Java
We removed the dependency on Java. We didn't want you to have to worry about whether you had to install Java first. In case you're curious, we've built the Content Analyzer using Python and PyQt.
Large Scorecards Now Load Faster
On some computers, the Acrolinx Scorecard took a while to display. That's because the scorecard was an XML file that the server transformed "on the fly" with XSLT ( Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations ). Sometimes this even caused people's browsers to crash. We've done away with all that malarkey and now we just give you the scorecard as an HTML file. So now it should display a lot faster and not crash your browser.
